JITOTM34: Flashbulb Memories

We all have them, and to some extent, we all share them. But why, and how, do flashbulb memories imprint themselves so strongly on our consciousness? Whether it's the death of an American president, or the series-winning goal of a Canadian hockey hero, something is going on in our minds - or is it our hearts? - in those memorable moments...

Find out what might be behind the camera of consciousness in this episode of JITOTM, Flashbulb Memories.

Hi Jay and Dave:

I am listening to the "flash Bulb Memory" podcast (lots of work these days, so I'm a little behind..) and I have a question. You were talking about the emotional center of the brain and I began to wonder if there are studies of what happens to the brain when someone breaks down and cries. They loose control of their body and mind. I don't know what use this type of behavior is in terms of evolution or general survival. I feel as if it is a part of the brain that spasms out of control and takes control of the rest.

Any comments?
