JITOTM04: Using Ideas As My Maps

Jay's hesitant to call Dylan lyrics gibberish. Instead, he leafs through Bob's back pages for some pertinent ideas. Along the way, a reflection in an overhead mirror leads to speculation about the location of Helen Keller's sense of self...

Jay Ingram muses over mental maps in this week's episode of Jay Ingram's Theatre of the Mind.

Your conversation today reminded me of two things. When I was teaching, I attended a seminar by Tony Buzan, who as a kid, had great difficulty 'capturing' his thoughts in a verbal, linear format, and as a result was labelled 'slow' in school. Knowing that he wasn't, he later created Mindmapping as a technique to draw a 'brain picture' of a lesson instead.

Secondly, as soon as Dave mentioned the guy with mirrors, I remembered watching a film in high school (circa 1963) about a fellow who wore glasses that turned his entire field of vision upside down. He wore them constantly for several weeks; and found after just a few days as I recall his brain made suitable adjustments and 'turned things back right side up again' for him. Surprisingly, when he finally took them off, his world went again instantly upside down, and his eyes/brain had to re-adjust again.

Fascinating stuff!
